Our Services
First and foremost, we are farmers. We work a small farm just outside Westby, WI. We've acquired a lot of experience and equipment over the years and love to share it with others. From offering our services to help you get your job done to offering educational opportunities for clients, students and non-profits. We make a big deal out of using the right equipment for the job. Want to know what makes our equipment different than what you can rent or buy in stores? Check out our "About Us" page to learn more. We are fully insured.
Custom Rototilling
Anyone who has used a traditional rear or front tine tiller knows that it's back breaking work. We will till that garden (or even that acreage!) for you utilizing a variety of tillage equipment. From a traditional four wheel tractor to lesser known walk-behind tractors, our equipment is built farm grade to do the job. Paired with our experience, we can handle gardens of all sizes and soil conditions. Our two wheel tractors give us the unique ability to walk alongside the tiller, ensuring that the soil is not compacted once tilled. Our goal is to give you the best planting conditions while also preserving soil structure and ecology. With that goal in mind, traditional tilling may not be the best option for you every year. Over-tilling can destroy vital soil ecology and lead to hardpan, an impervious layer of soil that plants can't root into. To avoid this, we offer additional services (such as power harrowing) that allow us to create a clean, plantable top layer of soil while preserving the soil structure and ecology below.

Power Harrowing
Power harrowing differs from rototilling in the way the soil is broken up. Whereas tilling upends the soil and turns it over, power harrowing stirs the top few inches of soil. This is beneficial in helping preserve vital soil structure and ecology, which in turn benefits fruits and vegetables planted there. After we pass over the soil with the power harrow, a mesh roller lightly presses the dirt into a clean, flat surface while not compacting it. Once complete, you're left with beautiful looking soil. Power harrowing is not, however, a primary tillage method. As soil settles and hardens over time, it is necessary to occasionally till. We recommend tilling the soil every few planting, but power harrowing in between each crop. Power harrowing is best done immediately before planting, preferably even the same day when possible. In some cases, the area to be power harrowed may need to be prepped by chopping up any plant remnants. This is a service we can offer as well.
Raised Rows
Raised rows are commonly used in large gardens and market gardens, although they can be utilized in any size garden. Raised rows are just like they sound, a raised and flattened mound of dirt with a depressed walkway on either side. In market gardening, these beds are typically constructed to be 30 in. wide with an 18 in. walkway between each. However, they can be built to virtually any size. Construction of these beds by hand is a back breaking task involving many hours of shoveling and raking. However, there's a better way to do it if you have the right equipment and experience. A rotary plow is a tool that taps into the power of the walk-behind tractor. It has spiraled blades that dig into the soil and throw it to the side. After passing up one side and down the other, you have two depressed walkways and a raised mound of dirt between. We finish up by running over it with a power harrow which leaves a beautiful and level raised row.

Food Plot Prep
We offer services to help you prep your food plot for planting. From large food plots with vehicle access, to small isolated food plots. If you can get an ATV there, we can get our equipment there. While our tractor mounted brush hog and tiller can easily prep your food plots that you have vehicle access to, our walk-behind tractor equipment can get through trails as small as 30 in. wide to prep that remote field. From mowing to tilling, we'll prep the land. For smaller and/or more isolated food plots, we may be able to seed for you as well (if you provide the seed).
Brush Mowing
We offer a variety of options for acreage mowing. Our tractor mounted brush hog can easily clear fields and trails of grass and brush. We use a 4 foot brush mower to let us get into tighter areas (such has around creeks) where larger tractors and mowers may have too much difficulty maneuvering.
Do you have a field that's difficult to access with a vehicle? Our walk-behind tractors allow us to access trails as small as 30 in. wide. Utilizing a flail mower attached to a walk-behind tractor, we can clear out brush just about anywhere that a normal tractor can't get to. In addition, we can also sickle mow fields if you'd prefer the grass to be cut and lay.

Minimal Till/No-Till
Over-tilling is bad for the soil. That might seem strange for a tilling business to be saying, but remember that we are first and foremost farmers. Soil ecology and preservation is crucial to the success of any garden or farming business. We want to help others feel a relationship and stewardship over their land and soil. Over-tilling destroys the vital micro-biome of soil and can lead to hardpan. Hardpan is a nearly impervious layer of soil that plants can't root into. While tilling is necessary occasionally, we offer a variety of other services to help you prepare your soil for planting that don't involve destroying that micro-biome. From power harrowing listed above to broad forking. Broad forking is a means of opening up the soil to receive water and nutrients and allowing plants to root deeper while preserving the soil ecology. It involves the thrusting of tines into the soil and gently rocking it back and forth to loosen the soil. This is done every six inches or so.
Flame Weeding
Flame weeding is the process of applying brief flame to small weeds. The idea is not to burn them to a crisp, but rather to destroy their ability to photosynthesis. Flaming a weed destroys the cell structure of the leaves so that the plant can no longer apply energy toward growth. This, in turn, kills the roots. Flame weeding is an excellent organic alternative to chemical herbicide treatments. Only a few hours after treatment, weeds begin to wilt and die (see photo to the right to see a garden bed a few hours after we flame weeded it). Flame weeding works best on plants that are 4" tall or under. It can be done to taller plants, but may require multiple applications. Keep in mind that flames are indiscriminate. Flame weeding should only be done to areas that you want to have all plant life killed. Once done, you're left with a weed free area for planting without any chemical residue left in the soil. Flame weeding may not be available during burn bans.

Education
We love working the soil and getting to know the land. We also love to teach others, especially about the equipment we use and how it can be used to care for your land. Have you thought about purchasing a walk-behind tractor, but not sure if it's right for you? Or, have you recently purchased a walk-behind tractor but could use some instruction on how to properly use it? Perhaps, you're not sure which implements you should purchase. We can answer all of those questions for you. We offer educational services to teach about and demonstrate walk-behind tractors, implements, flame weeding, etc. Our goal is to empower you, especially small farm farmers, to do some of the services we offer on your own. We will bring our equipment to you, on your land, and teach you how to use it (or show you how to use the equipment you've already purchased). There are different brands and sizes of walk-behind tractors available, each filling a specific roll. We'll demonstrate the various implements and help you determine the best tractor and implements for your unique needs. We also offer education to groups, often to introduce them to the world of walk-behind tractors. These services are free to schools and most non-profits involved with food growth. Contact us to setup a class or consultation!
Stump Grinding
We offer stump grinding services to help you get rid of those stumps in your way. Through the unique implementation of our walk-behind tractors, we are able to get our stump grinder into narrow and remote areas not normally accessible to larger driven or skid steer mounted units, such as side yards, through fence gates, or even trails! We are able to handle any size stump.

Mini-trenching
We offer mini-trenching services. A mini-trench is approximately 6 in. deep and 2 in. wide. This is a great and fast option when a shallow trench will suffice. Some instances where this would work include: invisible dog fences, burying phone/internet lines, shallow irrigation lines (that will be cleared or blown out before winter). etc.
Lawn Seed Prep
Thinking about planting new grass? Or, does your yard need repair after years of use by your pets? We can prep your yard and leave you soil that's ready for planting new seed, whether it's your whole yard or patches. A common method used by people when preparing to plant new grass seed is to till the yard. However, this often brings up dormant weed seeds that quickly take over. You're then left with a giant weed patch instead of a beautiful yard. The solution to this is carefully stirring the soil to create a soft, plantable bed. We achieve this by using a power harrow on the yard instead of a conventional rototiller.

Light Loader Work
We can make short work of that mulch or dirt pile. Our sub-compact tractor with loader is able to get into smaller areas than larger tractors and won't rip up your grass like a skid steer. Give us a call to discuss your project and your material moving needs.
Garden Mowing
Clearing out plants after harvest can be a big task. Then composting those plants takes time and energy. We have the tools to flail mow those plants and weeds into a green compost right there on your garden bed. No more pulling. This puts those nutrients right back into the soil. Our flail mower chops the greens into a fine mulch which then breaks down quickly to replenish the soil.
Combining flail mowing with our power harrowing service means we can have your garden ready for replanting right away. Power harrowing will mix the mulched greens into the soil, making them break down even more quickly, and leaves you with a garden bed ready to plant.
